Buick Century 4th Generation Origin
The 4th generation Buick Century was a follow-up to the 3rd. It is a mid-size car that was manufactured from 1978 to 1981. The Century title was used throughout the entire line, with the exception of the coupe, which maintained the Regal name. GM reduced the wheelbase and curb weight of its middle line by 4 inches and roughly half a ton.
At first, the Century was available as an “aero back” fastback two-door coupe, a fastback four-door sedan, and a station wagon (sharing bodies with the Oldsmobile Cutlass Salon). The vehicle’s assembly plants were located in Framingham, Massachusetts, and Lakewood Heights, Georgia, in the United States.

The vehicle was shorter by over afoot, a few inches smaller, and hundreds of pounds lighter than its forerunner. Big-block engines were phased out in favor of Buick’s new 196 cu in (3.2 L) V6 engine, specifically designed for the Century and Regal. The 231 cu in (3.8 L) V6 and the Chevrolet 305 V8 were both available as alternatives.
The 4th generation Buick Century was a rear-wheel-drive vehicle available in four body styles. They are the 2-door coupe, 2-door torpedo back coupe, 4-door sedan, and the 4-door station wagon. It had a wheelbase of 108.1 in. (2,746 mm), a length of 196 in. (4,978 mm), and a curb weight of 3130-3425 lbs.
The vehicle was available with three different transmission systems, including a 3-speed turbo-hydromantic, a 3-speed manual, and a 4-speed Saginaw manual. In 1979, the Pontiac 265 cu in (4.3 L) and 301 cu in (4.9 L) engines replaced the Chevrolet engine. The Century Turbo Coupe was one of the more relatively uncommon models from 1979 to 1980.
It was powered by a turbocharged grade of the 3.8 L V6, which provided V8-like performance with more satisfactory fuel usage and emissions. The Turbo Coupe was not as famous as the comparable Regal Turbo Sport Coupe, as total production was projected to be less than 2,500 units.
The two club coupe models, as well as the Oldsmobile Cutlass Salon, were unpopular. The fastback four-door sedan was phased out in favor of the predominant notchback four-door sedan in 1980, and the Century fastback coupe was withdrawn in 1980. The current notchback sedan and wagon designs were moved to the Regal line with the implementation of the new front-wheel-drive Century in 1982.
